Astro's Playroom is a bright, cartoon 3D platformer that comes pre-installed on the PlayStation 5, built to show off the DualSense controller. Players guide a small robot named Astro through four colorful worlds themed around PlayStation hardware, jumping, hovering, and punching or spin-attacking tiny enemy robots that harmlessly pop apart. There is no blood, no bad language, no sexual content, and no scary material. A gacha machine lets players spend coins earned in-game on collectible figurines, but it uses only in-game currency with no real-money purchases. The game is single-player; the only online feature is optional time-trial leaderboards, with no chat or interaction with other people.
The game frames its content as lighthearted, nostalgic celebration of PlayStation history. Combat is gentle and slapstick, enemies are comical machines rather than living things, and the overall tone is cheerful and playful throughout.
