What it is

Blasphemous is a dark-fantasy action-platformer (Metroidvania) in which the player controls a silent knight, the Penitent One, on a pilgrimage through the cursed land of Cvstodia. Play is built on exploration, upgrades and skilled sword combat against grotesque enemies, punctuated by graphic execution finishers that decapitate and dismember foes amid heavy blood and gore. The world draws deeply on Roman Catholic iconography and Spanish Holy Week imagery to depict guilt, suffering, self-flagellation and eternal torment, with partially bare and mutilated figures shown as part of its art. It is a single-player game with no online play, no chat, and no in-app purchases.

How it's framed

The game frames suffering, penance and guilt as its core subject, presenting religious devotion and bodily punishment as sources of both horror and meaning rather than endorsing or condemning them. Violence is carried out by the player against the corrupted inhabitants of a cursed land, and the tone treats their torment as tragic and grotesque rather than triumphant.
