What it is

Hades is a roguelike action role-playing game in which you play Zagreus, son of the Greek god of the dead, hacking and slashing your way out of the Underworld over repeated attempts. Combat is fast and stylized: you cut down shades, beasts, and mythological foes who burst into red blood and dissipate, with no dismemberment or lingering wounds. Death is the game's central subject; dying sends you back to start over, and the writing deals with family estrangement, grief, and the eternal punishments of the dead. Between runs, gods and residents of the Underworld talk with you: Aphrodite and others trade in sexual innuendo, the protagonist can pursue implied romances, and Aphrodite herself is drawn nude behind strategic cover. Characters swear at a moderate level, and wine and drinking run through the god Dionysus. It is played entirely solo, with no online chat and no purchases.

How it's framed

The game frames death not as a punishment but as part of a cycle of setback and growth, and presents its violence as heroic myth rather than realism. Its heavier material — grief, estrangement, and the torments of the Underworld — is carried through warm, frequently humorous character writing, and its flirtation and romances are shown as affection between named characters.
