What it is

Half-Life 2: Lost Coast is a short, free single-player level built by Valve as a technology showcase for high-dynamic-range lighting in the Source engine. Playing as scientist Gordon Freeman, you climb a coastal cliff to reach a monastery that enemy Combine soldiers are using to shell a seaside town, then fight your way through to disable their artillery. Play consists of first-person shooting against armored soldiers and lunging headcrab creatures using guns, rockets, and a gravity gun that flings objects; enemies bleed when hit but there is no gore or dismemberment. The level contains no sexual content, nudity, strong language, substances, or purchases, and is entirely offline with no chat or multiplayer.

How it's framed

Combat is framed as straightforward resistance against a hostile occupying military force; the player defends a town under bombardment, and violence is presented as functional shooter action rather than something glorified or dwelt upon.
