What it is

Half-Life: Blue Shift is a single-player first-person shooter expansion set during the same alien-invasion disaster as the original Half-Life, but seen through the eyes of Black Mesa security guard Barney Calhoun. The player fights through a collapsing research facility using conventional firearms against alien creatures and a detachment of human marines, solving environmental puzzles and escorting a scientist to safety. Combat is realistic: enemies bleed and leave bodies behind, but there is no dismemberment or gore. The setting is grim — the facility is a warzone strewn with the dead, and soldiers have orders to kill any witnesses. There is no sexual content, nudity, profanity of note, substances, or monetization; the game is bought once and played offline.

How it's framed

The game frames the player as a lone survivor trying to escape a catastrophe rather than a soldier on a mission, and the human marines are presented as a threat precisely because they are killing unarmed staff to bury the incident. Violence is the core mechanic and is treated as survival against overwhelming odds; the story dwells on chaos, death and institutional cover-up without glorifying it.
