Fast-paced multiplayer combat where players shoot each other with sci-fi weapons; hits produce blood spray and some bodies can be gibbed, but combat is against respawning human/alien player avatars rather than gore-focused.

What it is

Half-Life Deathmatch: Source is an online multiplayer arena shooter that recreates the original Half-Life's competitive deathmatch on Valve's Source engine. Players spawn into science-fiction maps armed with the series' classic weapons (crowbar, pistols, shotguns, the crossbow, energy weapons, grenades and satchel charges) and try to score the most frags by killing other human-controlled players. Combat is the entire focus: shooting produces blood and, with heavier weapons, bodies can come apart, though it is stylized late-1990s-style violence against respawning opponents rather than lingering gore. There are no purchases, gambling, sexual content, or story. The main variable content comes from playing on live public servers, where a small remaining community can talk to one another via in-game text chat that is not moderated or filtered.

How it's framed

The game frames its violence as pure competitive sport — the only goal is to out-shoot other players for points, with instant respawns and no narrative stakes, consequences, or villains, so killing is presented as a scorekeeping mechanic rather than something dramatized or moralized.
