Ready or Not is a realistic tactical first-person shooter in which you lead a police SWAT team through raids on a crime-ridden American city. Play is deliberate and lethal: you and enemies both go down in a few shots, so you plan entries, clear rooms, and are pushed to arrest suspects rather than kill them. The situations are extremely dark—armed standoffs, a school shooting, mass shootings, drug labs, sex trafficking, and pornography and child-exploitation rings—with realistic gunfire, blood, and disturbing crime scenes showing abused and murdered victims. There is strong language, drug imagery, and partial nudity tied to the exploitation scenarios. Online co-op for up to five players exists, but the game includes no built-in voice or text chat and no purchases.
The game frames the player as law enforcement restoring order, rewarding restraint—more points for arresting suspects alive than for killing them—and tracking officers' mental deterioration after violent missions. Its own note states it aims to honor police work and not glorify criminal acts, and it warns players affected by real violence away. The disturbing subject matter is presented as grim crime-scene reality rather than as spectacle or reward.
