What it is

Resident Evil 3 is a survival-horror shooter and a remake of the 1999 original in which you play mostly as Jill Valentine, a former police officer trying to escape a city overrun by zombies after a company's engineered virus is released. Played from over the shoulder, it mixes gunfights, knife melee, dodging, item management, and light puzzle-solving while a towering, mutating monster called Nemesis hunts you through key sequences. The game is heavy on blood and gore: enemies can be shot apart, decapitated, and dismembered, and the environments show the grisly aftermath of the outbreak. Dialogue includes strong profanity. A bundled online mode, Resident Evil Resistance, pits four survivors against one controlling player and supports voice and text chat with strangers; there are no in-app purchases.

How it's framed

The game frames the player as a survivor and rescuer fighting to stop a corporation's deadly bioweapon and save others, so the extensive violence is aimed at infected monsters and antagonists rather than innocents. The corporate villains are shown as the cause of the catastrophe, and the tone treats the outbreak as a horror and tragedy rather than something to celebrate.
