What it is

Tribes: Ascend is a fast, team-based online first-person shooter set in a science-fiction universe, built around jetpacks and frictionless 'skiing' across large outdoor maps. Players pick an armor class and loadout, then compete in modes such as Capture the Flag, Team Deathmatch and Capture & Hold, using disc launchers, energy weapons and explosives against opposing teams of armored soldiers. Combat is the whole of the game: hits cause blood spray and defeated players ragdoll, but there is no dismemberment, gore, sexual content, drug use or profanity written into the game. It is a competitive online game played with and against strangers, so the main variable content is what other players type in chat.

How it's framed

The game frames its violence as team sport and objective play rather than narrative or consequence — kills score points, capture the flag, and defend the base, with no story, villain, or moral stakes attached to the shooting.
