What it is

Verdun is an online first-person shooter built around squad play, recreating World War I trench combat and drawing on the 1916 clash at Verdun. Matches can hold as many as 64 combatants who seize and hold portions of the Western Front, wielding period-correct bolt-action rifles, machine guns, bayonets, grenades, plus backup options such as shelling and white phosphorus. The fighting is grounded and deadly, with fine-grained wound and blood effects: struck troops grab at their injuries, collapse, and scream, and weapons that spread fire and gas appear as well. A menu toggle lets players switch off blood and gore completely. It contains nothing sexual, no drugs or alcohol, and no purchasable extras. Since matches run over the internet, players encounter spoken and typed chat from people they do not know.

How it's framed

Rather than dressing up its bloodshed as thrilling spectacle, the title presents combat as a bleak, faithful re-creation of trench fighting in the Great War, foregrounding believability, deadliness, and the grinding push-and-pull along the Western Front. Competitors take the field as rival national units, and the design pins no tale of heroes or wrongdoers onto either faction.
