What it is

This is a squad-based real-time tactics game set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, where the player leads a small band of Space Marine sergeants against the forces of Chaos across a series of missions. Rather than building bases, you pick a handful of squads, position them in cover and fight pitched battles, with each leader gaining experience, new abilities and looted wargear as an RPG-style progression. Combat is heavy and gory: squads shoot, blast and hack apart human, alien and daemonic foes, with abundant blood and enemies torn apart in close-quarters kills. The expansion adds a corruption mechanic in which the player's own marines can slide toward Chaos, gaining daemonic powers and equipment as the story deals with betrayal and the fall of once-loyal warriors. The setting is bleak and militaristic throughout, steeped in supernatural Chaos imagery, daemon summoning and warp sorcery.

How it's framed

The game frames its violence as a righteous crusade: the player's Blood Ravens are cast as defenders purging a corrupting enemy, and killing is rewarded with experience and gear. Chaos and its corruption are presented as a seductive but ruinous temptation, and the optional slide toward daemonic power is treated in the narrative as a fall rather than a triumph, with consequences for the chapter's warriors.
