What it is

Bastion is a hand-painted, isometric action role-playing game in which you control a boy called 'the Kid' as he explores floating fantasy environments in the aftermath of the Calamity, a disaster that shattered his world. A narrator comments on the action throughout. Combat is the core loop: the Kid uses melee weapons, ranged weapons, and special attacks to defeat waves of creatures and enemies in a stylized style with no blood or gore. Between missions the player upgrades gear and drinks named fantasy spirits and liquors for stat bonuses. The plot deals with heavy themes of catastrophe, mass death, and conflict between peoples, told in an abstract and reflective tone. It is a single-player game with no online chat, ads, or in-app purchases.

How it's framed

The game frames its violence as survival against hostile creatures in a broken world and treats its apocalyptic backstory thoughtfully, weighing themes of loss, guilt, and whether to restore or forgive; combat is stylized rather than graphic, and alcohol appears as a light, fantasy-flavored buff mechanic.
