The player pilots mechs that shoot and blast other mechs and vehicles, causing explosions and burning out enemy machines in a stylized, bloodless war game.
The story deals with political intrigue, civil war, and the loss of a homeworld, and mercenary pilots can be killed in battle.
The player runs a mercenary company that accepts bounties and contracts, sometimes from criminal or morally ambiguous factions.
Occasional mild profanity appears in dialogue.
Playing out over turns, this tactical strategy title drops the player into the BattleTech setting as the leader of a hired outfit piloting towering combat robots amid a future ravaged by conflict. Each round, units take turns advancing across the map and opening fire on the enemy. Two ways to play are provided: a scripted story mode plus an open-ended career track in which the player runs their own for-hire outfit. Fighting drives everything here, with the walking machines taking hits, being torn to pieces, and catching fire, yet the visuals stay stylized and show no gore. Language can be coarse in spots, and the fiction carries a bleak tone where right and wrong blur. Players can load community-built modifications from the Workshop, though there is no cooperative or competitive online play and no chat with other people.
Its subject matter is viewed through the survival of guns-for-hire and what warfare leaves behind, treating armed conflict as a business transaction and as the price of existence in a bleak, war-driven galaxy, while stopping short of celebrating the pain that results.
