Crucible was a free-to-play, team-based online hero shooter in which players pick from a roster of human, alien, and robot 'hunters,' each with distinct weapons and abilities, and fight in 4-versus-4 matches. Gameplay is fast, stylized sci-fi combat: players shoot opposing hunters and also clear neutral creatures that populate the map to gather resources and level up during a match. There is no sexual content, nudity, or in-game profanity, and violence is bloody but not graphic — no gore or dismemberment. Because matches are played online, the main content consideration is interaction with strangers through open voice and text chat. As a free-to-play game it sold optional cosmetic items for real money. Note that development was cancelled in 2020, so the game is no longer playable.
The game frames its violence as competitive team sport rather than a story: hunters are colorful sci-fi combatants and the goal is to win the match, with no narrative that dwells on death, cruelty, or heavy themes. Killing enemy players and map creatures is presented as neutral, points-driven gameplay.
