What it is

Darkest Dungeon is a gothic roguelike role-playing game in which you inherit a corrupted estate and send parties of hired heroes into procedurally built dungeons to fight monsters, undead, and cultists in turn-based combat. Its defining mechanic is stress: heroes accumulate psychological strain and can break down into afflictions like paranoia, masochism, or hopelessness, suffer heart attacks, and die permanently. The presentation is heavy with cosmic-horror dread, stylised blood, grotesque enemy designs, and themes of madness, disease, and despair. The town where you manage heroes includes vice-based stress-relief facilities — a bar, a gambling table using in-game gold, and a brothel — all handled through menus rather than shown.

How it's framed

The game frames its subject matter through cold estate management, treating heroes as flawed, expendable tools whose sanity and lives are resources to be spent. It presents adventuring as a grim, often futile struggle against inevitable ruin, and dwells on the psychological toll of that struggle rather than glorifying heroism; the vice facilities are cast as desperate coping outlets for broken minds.
