Fear is the core of the game — the player is stalked and hunted through dark locations by hostile ghosts with frequent jump scares and constant threat of a lethal attack.
The player performs occult actions as core gameplay, using a spirit board to summon and question spirits and carrying out rituals to identify and exorcise demons.
Hostile spirits attack and kill the player in on-screen death animations with visible blood; injury is shown but bodies are not dismembered.
The cursed houses carry backstories of death and demonic possession, and the player investigates the aftermath of hauntings.
Demonologist is a co-op horror game for one to four players in which you investigate cursed, haunted locations, gather evidence to identify the type of evil spirit present, and then drive it out using ritual equipment. Play is built around exploring dark environments, using tools like a spirit board and EMF readers, and surviving a hostile ghost that hunts and can kill you. It contains frequent horror content — jump scares, being pursued by a spirit, and violent on-screen deaths with blood — and heavy supernatural and occult subject matter including summoning, communicating with the dead, and exorcism. Online play uses voice and text chat with other players, and in public lobbies that can include strangers.
The game frames the player as a paranormal investigator whose job is to identify and banish malevolent spirits; violence is directed at supernatural entities and at the player when a ghost attacks, and the occult tools — spirit boards, summoning, exorcism rituals — are presented as the standard equipment of the investigation rather than being condemned or endorsed.
