What it is

Devil May Cry 5 is a fast, combo-driven action game in which you play three demon hunters battling waves of demons through a modern city being consumed by a monstrous otherworldly tree. Combat is the core: you chain sword strikes, gunfire, and special transformations to build a graded 'style' rating. Enemies bleed when hit and burst apart into effects when destroyed, and the story includes a bloody arm-severing scene, heavy loss, and grotesque demon designs. Characters trade strong profanity and suggestive, flirtatious banter, and one cutscene shows a nude character obscured by lighting. Play is essentially single-player; an online 'cameo' feature shows anonymized ghost-runs of other players rather than any open chat.

How it's framed

The game frames its demon-slaying as heroic spectacle — the player's characters hunt demons to protect people and settle a family score, and the presentation rewards flashy, skillful combat rather than cruelty. Its darker material, the blood-draining tree and characters' suffering, sits in service of a stylized supernatural adventure with a self-aware, tongue-in-cheek tone.
