What it is

DOOM Eternal is a single-player first-person shooter in which you play the Doom Slayer fighting to stop Hell's demons from destroying Earth and humanity. Combat is extremely fast and relentless, built around gunfights against demonic enemies with heavy blood and over-the-top gore; a central mechanic has you finish staggered demons with brutal hand-to-hand 'Glory Kill' executions that rip them apart to recover health and ammo. The setting is soaked in hellish and demonic imagery — pentagrams, altars, and grotesque monster designs — and the story deals with an apocalyptic invasion and the near-wiping-out of humankind. There is no sexual content, nudity, drugs, or in-game purchases, and the game itself contains little to no strong language. Alongside the campaign is an optional 'Battlemode' where players face each other online.

How it's framed

The game frames its violence as an unapologetic, high-energy power fantasy: the player is the unstoppable hero and the demons are the threat that fears you, so tearing them apart is presented as triumphant and satisfying rather than disturbing. The hell-and-demon imagery is stylized heavy-metal spectacle used for atmosphere rather than any real-world ritual or belief, and the apocalyptic stakes serve the action rather than sober reflection.
