What it is

Dungeons & Dragons Online is a fantasy massively multiplayer online role-playing game adapting the tabletop D&D ruleset, set in the Eberron and Forgotten Realms worlds. Players build a character, join others in party-based dungeon crawls narrated by a Dungeon Master, and fight humanoids, undead and monsters using weapons and spells; combat shows blood but no dismemberment. Story content ranges from heroic adventuring to darker gothic material, including a Ravenloft chapter set in a cursed, vampire-ruled land. The game is free to play with an optional VIP subscription and a real-money store that sells content unlocks, character options and gameplay-affecting boosts, and it includes open text and voice chat with other players.

How it's framed

The game frames combat as heroic adventuring against monsters and villains in the classic D&D mode, with the Dungeon Master presenting quests as tales of danger and reward. Darker material such as undeath, tyranny and the Ravenloft curse is presented as menace for the heroes to overcome rather than dwelt on for shock. Its magic, demons and necromancy are treated as fantasy setting elements woven into the D&D world.
