What it is

Far Cry 2 is an open-world first-person shooter set in a fictional, war-torn African country. You play a mercenary hired to track down an arms dealer, and to survive you take contracts from the two warring factions tearing the region apart. Combat is realistic and frequent: you fight human enemies with guns, explosives and fire, wounds bleed, and your own character graphically performs field first aid such as digging out bullets or resetting bones. Between missions you must manage recurring bouts of malaria by taking pills. The world is bleak and violent, the scripted dialogue carries strong profanity, and the story turns on betrayal, corruption and the human cost of civil war. Historic online multiplayer included a map editor for sharing player-made maps and text chat.

How it's framed

The game frames its mercenary as a morally compromised figure profiting from a conflict that harms everyone around him; the warlords on both sides are shown as corrupt and self-serving, and the fires, malaria and endless fighting present the war as grim and futile rather than heroic.
