What it is

Generation Zero is an open-world, first-person shooter set in an alternate-history 1989 Sweden overrun by hostile machines. Playing as a teenager who returns home to find the population gone, you scavenge weapons and supplies and wage guerilla-style combat against robotic enemies alone or in co-op with up to three others. The violence is realistic-weapon combat aimed exclusively at machines, with no human enemies and no gore, though dead human bodies are found in the abandoned world. The overall tone is bleak and suspenseful, built around isolation, an emptied landscape, and the mystery of what happened, rather than sexual content, drugs, or graphic cruelty. Online play uses voice and text chat.

How it's framed

The game frames the player as a lone survivor and resistance fighter defending an occupied homeland against a mechanical invasion. Combat is directed at machines rather than people, and the emotional weight sits in the eerie emptiness of a country whose inhabitants have disappeared. It presents survival and uncovering the truth as its goals without glorifying real-world violence, crime, or any group.
