What it is

Ghost of Tsushima is an open-world action-adventure set during the 13th-century Mongol invasion of Japan, where you play a samurai defending his island home. Most of the game is melee sword combat and stealth against human enemy soldiers, with realistic blood, on-screen killing, and occasional beheadings. The story is heavy in tone: burned villages, slaughtered and poisoned civilians, tortured prisoners, and the theme of ritual honor-suicide (seppuku). Characters drink sake, and quiet hot-spring scenes show the hero bathing with non-explicit, implied nudity. The base campaign is single-player; a separate online co-op mode (Legends) lets you team up with other players, where matchmade play and platform voice chat can put you in contact with strangers.

How it's framed

The game frames its central conflict as a choice between fighting by an honorable samurai code and using practical but 'dishonorable' tactics like assassination and poison, and it presents this as a genuine moral weight rather than an obvious right answer. Violence against the invaders is heroic and rewarded, but the story does not shy from the cost of war, showing atrocities committed against civilians and the personal grief that comes with the protagonist's choices.
