What it is

Grim Dawn is a dark-fantasy action role-playing game set in Cairn, a ruined world where humanity has been pushed to the brink of extinction by a war between otherworldly powers. Players build a character across combinable class specializations, hack through hordes of monstrous and human enemies, and collect loot, crafting materials, and gear. Combat is bloody, with death effects and some dismemberment, and the setting leans into grim, macabre imagery: eldritch invaders, corrupted ruins, and cults that carry out blood rituals and summon demonic beings. It can be played solo or in small online co-op parties of up to four, where players can encounter and text-chat with strangers in public games. There are no in-app purchases; expansions are sold separately as full DLC.

How it's framed

The game presents its violence and dark supernatural content as the backdrop of a desperate survival struggle: the player is a resurrected survivor fighting to reclaim a dying world from possessing spirits and demonic cults. Killing enemies and cleansing corrupted shrines are framed as heroic resistance rather than glorified cruelty, and player choices with factions carry consequences, but the tone throughout is bleak and unflinching.
