What it is

GRIS is a wordless side-scrolling platform-adventure in which a young girl moves through a faded, crumbling world, restoring color and unlocking new movement abilities as she goes. There is no combat, dialogue, or fail state; the challenge is light platforming and environmental puzzles. Its emotional core is an abstract portrayal of grief and depression after the loss of the girl's mother, told entirely through art, music, movement and visual symbolism. The only threatening element is a shapeless dark creature that briefly chases and tries to consume her.

How it's framed

The game frames loss as something to be moved through toward acceptance and hope; heavy feelings of sorrow are represented poetically as darkness and drained color that the player gradually turns back into light and beauty, with no violence, cruelty, or explicit content.
