What it is

In GUILTY GEAR -STRIVE-, two fighters face off at a time, chosen from a broad roster of heavily stylized characters who bring blades, guns, folding fans, and assorted other armaments into the ring. Rounds move quickly and reward chained attacks; landing a strike throws up bright, exaggerated sprays of blood, yet wounds stay non-explicit and nothing worse happens to a character's body. How the fighters look spans the plain to the provocative, and a handful wear skimpy costumes, though nothing sexual or nude appears. Its extended narrative campaign digs into darker material, touching on warfare, engineered living weaponry, and the demise of characters the player has come to know, and drinking turns up in a few moments. The script drops the occasional mild swear. Playing over the internet puts you against unknown opponents and opens text-based chat with them inside lobby areas.

How it's framed

Fighting here is cast as flashy contest and showmanship instead of true injury, while the plot handles its themes of conflict and grief sincerely, in a dramatic register. Trading blows is the central activity, dressed up as athletic competition, and winning comes down to how well the player performs.
