What it is

HELLDIVERS 2 is an online four-player cooperative third-person shooter in which squads drop onto alien planets to complete objectives while battling swarms of giant insectoid 'Terminids' and robotic 'Automatons.' Combat is fast and heavy on gunfire, explosives, airstrikes, and turrets, with frequent blood and dismemberment as enemies are torn apart; because friendly fire is always on, teammates can also be blown up by each other. Beyond the graphic combat there is little other mature content, though the game is monetized with optional real-money purchases and includes voice and text chat with strangers in matchmade squads.

How it's framed

The game frames its relentless violence as heroic duty through over-the-top satire, wrapping mass warfare in cartoonish propaganda about spreading 'managed democracy' and 'liberty.' Enemies are alien bugs and machines rather than humans, and the tone is deliberately comedic and jingoistic, treating the player's own expendability and constant killing as patriotic glory.
