What it is

Hitman 2: Silent Assassin is a 2002 stealth game in which you play Agent 47, a genetically engineered contract killer drawn out of retirement to rescue a kidnapped friend. Each mission drops you into a large open location — from a Sicilian mansion to snowy St. Petersburg streets to temples in Japan and India — with one or more people to assassinate. The intended approach is patience and disguise: knock out or kill a guard, take their uniform, slip past suspicion, and eliminate the target quietly with a silenced pistol, a sniper rifle, poison in a drink, or a garrote wire. You can instead fight your way through with guns, and gunfights produce blood and leave bodies behind, but the game grades you afterward and rewards restraint, giving its top 'Silent Assassin' rank only when almost no one but the target is harmed. The subject matter is murder for hire, betrayal, and organised crime; there is no sexual content, nudity, or gore-focused violence.

How it's framed

The game casts the player as a professional killer but frames its scoring around discipline rather than carnage: killing bystanders lowers your rank and killing everyone earns the derisive 'Mass Murderer' title, while a clean, unseen job earns the highest reward. Targets are drawn as corrupt or criminal, and 47 is given a personal motive — saving a kidnapped friend — that colours the contracts as loyalty and justice as much as work.
