What it is

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is a fast, stylised hack-and-slash action game in which the player controls Raiden, a cyborg ninja, cutting through waves of enemy cyborgs, drones and giant war machines with a high-frequency blade. Its signature Blade Mode slows time so the player can freely slice foes into dozens of pieces and rip out their spinal fuel cells for health, producing sprays of blood and constant dismemberment of mechanical and part-human bodies. The story deals with heavy subject matter, including Raiden's past as a child soldier and a plot to harvest the brains of kidnapped children to program new soldiers. Cutscene dialogue carries strong profanity. The game is single-player with no online interaction, purchases or chat.

How it's framed

The game presents its extreme cutting as knowingly over-the-top spectacle while using boss fights and monologues to argue over the nature of violence, war run as a for-profit industry, and whether killing can be justified; Raiden ultimately embraces his own capacity for violence to protect the powerless rather than treating it as glorified or consequence-free.
