What it is

Nioh 2 is a challenging action role-playing game set in a fictionalized version of Japan's civil-war-torn Sengoku era, blended with folklore monsters called yokai. Players build a half-human, half-yokai warrior and battle through mission-based levels using swords, spears, dual blades, bows, and firearms in fast, demanding, blood-splattered combat against human soldiers and supernatural demons. The tone is dark and violent: enemies bleed and are struck down in visceral melee, the world is filled with death and corruption, and grotesque, frightening creatures lurk in shadowy 'Dark Realm' zones. Milder content includes revealing designs on some enemies and drinkable sake that buffs the character. Online co-op with other players is available but there is no in-game text or voice chat, only preset gestures.

How it's framed

The game frames the player as a warrior cutting through both human enemies and demonic yokai amid the brutality of a real historical war; killing is the core mechanic and is rewarded with experience, loot, and progression. Its supernatural elements draw on Japanese mythology and folklore rather than real-world occult ritual, and violence is stylized action rather than realistic gore-focused torment.
