Orcs Must Die! Unchained is a free-to-play blend of tower defense and third-person action set in a comic fantasy world where wizards defend magical rifts from waves of orcs and other monsters. Playing a hero, you lay down damage traps across a fortress and then wade in with weapons and spells to finish off the horde, either co-operatively against the game's waves or against another team. Combat is fast and cartoonish: orcs are crushed, burned, launched and cut down with stylized blood and comedic flair, but without realistic wounds or graphic dismemberment. The tone is light and jokey throughout. As a free-to-play game it is built around in-app purchases, and real money can buy gear, character cards and chests that affect how powerful you are in play, alongside rotating offers and reward systems that encourage continued spending. It is an online multiplayer game played with strangers via matchmaking.
How it's framed
The game frames its violence as slapstick heroic fantasy: the player is a bumbling-but-lethal war mage having the time of his life mowing down invading orcs, with elaborate victory dances rewarding a strong performance. Killing is celebratory and comedic rather than grim, and the enemies are presented as a faceless murderous horde, so the framing stays firmly in the register of cartoon action rather than serious conflict.
