What it is

Portal Stories: Mel is a free, community-made expansion for Portal 2 in which you play Mel, a test subject who wakes from decades of hibernation and must escape an underground science facility by solving first-person portal puzzles. Guided by a friendly maintenance robot, you use a portal gun and momentum gels to cross chambers while avoiding hazards. The content is very light: peril comes from robotic turrets that shoot at you and from rising deadly goo, with no blood, gore, injury, sexual content, strong language, substances, or spending of any kind. The tone leans on an eerie, abandoned-facility atmosphere and a somber story about being trapped and forgotten.

How it's framed

The game frames its stakes as survival and escape through puzzle-solving; danger is presented as automated machinery and environmental hazards rather than personal violence, and the narrative treats the ruined facility and Mel's long isolation with a wistful, melancholy tone.
