What it is

Rust is a multiplayer-only survival game where you spawn on an open island with nothing and must gather resources, craft tools and weapons, build a base, and manage hunger, thirst, and health. The world is populated by hostile wildlife and NPC threats, but the main danger is other players, who can raid, rob, kill, and betray you at any time; servers periodically wipe all progress. Combat is realistic and uses guns, bows, and melee weapons with blood effects. Players spawn fully nude by default (this can be disabled), and the game relies heavily on open voice and text chat with strangers, where profanity and slurs are common. Optional cosmetic skins can be bought with real money.

How it's framed

The game presents survival as morally open-ended: raiding, stealing, deceiving, and killing other players are all valid strategies with no in-game judgment attached, and success is measured purely by whether you outlast and outfight everyone else. It frames hardship, loss, and player conflict as the core experience rather than rewarding any particular ethical path.
