What it is

Serious Sam 3: BFE is a fast, old-school first-person shooter set in a 22nd-century Egypt overrun by an alien army. As a lone soldier, the player wields a large arsenal of guns plus a sledgehammer to fight off huge waves of monsters and cloned enemy troops across open arenas. Combat is loud and bloody: enemies bleed and burst apart under fire, and close-range melee kills can rip an eye from a creature or tear it open. Beyond the gore of combat there is no sexual content, no substances and no real-money spending, though a few enemy monster designs feature bare, exposed torsos. The campaign can be played solo or online with up to sixteen players, with voice and text chat and player-made content through the game's map tools and Steam Workshop.

How it's framed

The game frames its violence as cartoonishly over-the-top spectacle rather than realistic harm — the targets are alien monsters and invaders, and killing them in large numbers is the entire point and reward of play. A thin story of a doomed Earth-defense mission sets the stage but is not dwelt on; the tone is wisecracking and action-driven rather than grim.
