What it is

Splatoon 3 is a colorful team-based shooter in which players control squid-like humanoids called Inklings who spray ink across arenas in fast four-versus-four online matches, a cooperative wave-survival mode against fictional fish-like Salmonid creatures, and a single-player story campaign. The core action involves covering turf and 'splatting' opponents with ink; a splatted character simply returns to their starting point with no blood or injury. There is no chat with strangers built into matches, though players can create and share drawn art posts that appear in the game's public plaza. It requires a paid Nintendo Switch Online subscription for online play but has no in-game microtransactions, loot boxes, or gambling.

How it's framed

The game frames its conflict as a stylish, sport-like turf war rooted in youth street culture, with a bright cartoon tone and no real-world weaponry, gore, or death; combat is presented as playful competition rather than lethal violence.
