The player commands armies and fleets that destroy enemy infantry, vehicles and starships in explosions; deaths are shown as small units being eliminated with no blood, wounds or gore.
The premise is a galactic civil war and a planet-destroying superweapon, the Death Star, can wipe a world off the campaign map; the mass death sits in the setting and is not shown as on-screen suffering.
Star Wars: Empire at War - Gold Pack is a real-time strategy game set between the third and fourth films, where you command either the Rebel Alliance or the Galactic Empire (and, in the included expansion, a criminal underworld faction) across a galaxy-spanning war. Play alternates between a top-down galactic map for building fleets, researching technology and managing planets, and real-time battles fought in space and on the ground with fighters, capital ships, infantry and walkers. Iconic characters such as Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi appear as hero units with special abilities. Combat is destruction of vehicles and units with explosions rather than depicted injury, and the game supports online multiplayer with voice and text chat as well as a large community-mod scene through Steam Workshop.
The game frames its conflict as grand military strategy: units and fleets are resources to be built, positioned and spent, and battles resolve as tactical objectives rather than personal harm. The stakes of the war, including a superweapon capable of destroying worlds, are presented at the abstract scale of a strategy map, with no graphic depiction of casualties.
