Top-down twin-stick gunfire, explosives, and airstrikes against alien insects, cyborgs, and squid-like aliens, with blood spray and enemies blown apart; friendly fire can also kill teammates.
A satirical, militaristic dystopia where a totalitarian regime calls itself a 'managed democracy' and glorifies endless war, presented as broad parody.
HELLDIVERS is a top-down, twin-stick cooperative shooter for up to four players, who drop onto procedurally generated planets to complete objectives and fight three enemy factions: giant space bugs, robotic cyborgs, and squid-like aliens. Combat is fast and chaotic, using guns, explosives, turrets, and called-in airstrikes; small-scale blood appears and enemies (and downed players) can be torn apart. A defining feature is permanent friendly fire, so stray shots, ordnance, and drop pods can kill teammates. It is played online with strangers or friends via matchmaking with voice and text chat, and there are no in-app purchases in the core game.
The game wraps its action in over-the-top satire of nationalism and propaganda: players fight to spread 'managed democracy' for Super Earth against dehumanized alien threats, and the earnest patriotic tone is played for parody rather than presented as a serious ideology. Killing is framed as heroic duty, though the game gives no reward for kills alone and pushes players toward completing objectives.
