What it is

Players download Stormgate at no cost and, viewing the action from above, harvest materials, raise a headquarters, and marshal troops to fight rival commanders in this real-time strategy title. Solo players can follow a narrative campaign; up to three people team up in a cooperative option; and competitive play pits one person against another or one squad against another over a large selection of battlegrounds. A bundled toolset lets people design their own modes and pass them around. The fiction unfolds on an Earth left in ruins after demons overran it, with playable sides that span human holdouts, a hellish 'Infernal Host', and the robotic ranks of a Celestial force. Because everything happens at the scale of armies, fighters collide and vanish in stylized bursts, with no blood or wounds depicted. A romantic storyline runs between figures in the campaign. Money spent in the game buys both decorative extras and material that broadens what you can play, including additional campaign chapters and heroes for the co-op mode. Where online matches are running, they link participants via unrestricted voice and typed messaging as well as the community-made content people trade.

How it's framed

Killing here reads as army-versus-army tactics instead of individual cruelty, and every loss stays anonymous and gore-free at the level of whole formations. The hell-spawned Infernal side stands in for a made-up end-of-the-world threat and connects to no actual faith. The purchase model puts its emphasis on being easy to reach and on sustaining a tiny development team, yet it stacks chargeable material — campaign and cooperative heroes — atop the cost-free foundation, an arrangement that drew a pointed response from its community once items people had already bought were relocated behind fresh fees.
