Subnautica 2

Intense overall intensity
Highest flag: Horror & psychological — sustained dread

What's in it

Horror & psychological sustained dread
High

Alien creatures chase players underwater; fear is built on suspense and survival rather than gore or graphic imagery.

Dark themes intense
Moderate

The story involves death and rebirth through cloning, removing stakes around player character mortality.

Suicide & self-harm depicted
Moderate

Recovered colonist logs and the colony surgeon's medical notes describe Masefield Syndrome, a delusional illness among the pioneers whose symptoms include hallucinations, trances and suicidal intent, with sufferers compelled to swim out to the World Tree and drown themselves. It reaches the player only as text and audio recordings found in the wreckage; no act of self-harm is shown on screen and the player never performs one.

Violence cartoon/stylized
Low

The player is unarmed and cannot harm or defend against hostile creatures; they can only flee or avoid them.

Animal combat combat mechanic
Low

Players catch live fish by hand and cook them in the fabricator to eat, and fend off hostile sea creatures by striking, parrying or shocking them with the survival multitool. The harm is a plain survival mechanic - fish are simply taken and cooked, and there is no blood, wounding or gore shown.

What it is

Set beneath the waves of an extraterrestrial planet, Subnautica 2 tasks players with staying alive and exploring, constructing habitats and craft as they piece together the world's mysteries and contend with hostile creatures. To fend off attackers, a person relies on tools that don't kill, such as flares or stun batons that deliver an electric jolt; the game shows neither severed limbs nor bloodshed. What drives its intensity is being caught off guard when a creature strikes out of nowhere, not depictions of brutality. Purchasable extras are limited to decorative goods, and while multiplayer puts a person alongside unfamiliar people, talking by voice isn't included.

How it's framed

A person is cast as someone enduring a harsh world populated by hunting creatures, with fighting back allowed only up to a point. Rather than centering conflict or wrecking things, the experience leans toward venturing out, finding new things, and constructing.
