What it is

A Way Out is a two-player-only cooperative action-adventure set in 1972, where you and a partner control two convicts, Leo and Vincent, who break out of prison and go on the run seeking revenge on the man who wronged them. Played entirely in split-screen with a friend, it mixes stealth, puzzle-solving, driving and shootout set pieces with lighter minigames like fishing, darts and arm wrestling. The story is a gritty crime drama containing realistic violence and gunfights with blood, frequent strong profanity, drinking and smoking, and a scene in which the players beat and torture a captive for information, all building to a dark, emotionally heavy ending.

How it's framed

The game frames its crimes and violence as the desperate acts of two flawed men driven by revenge and survival, presenting their bond sympathetically while treating the story's later betrayals and losses as tragedy rather than triumph; the torture and killings are dramatized as harsh consequences of the criminal world the characters inhabit.
