What it is

Sunset Overdrive is a fast, comedic third-person action game set in a fictional near-future city overrun by mutants created when people drink too much of a corporation's new energy drink. As a former employee of that company, the player zips around an open world by wall-running, grinding rails, and bouncing off objects while blasting waves of mutants and rival gangs with a large arsenal of over-the-top weapons. The style is bright, cartoonish, and self-aware, and it leans heavily on crude, raunchy humor, near-constant strong profanity, and sexual innuendo. Combat is exaggerated and colorful but does show bursts of blood, and the whole premise satirizes energy-drink and consumer culture. A matchmade online co-op mode lets several players tackle missions together, which can bring voice chat with strangers.

How it's framed

The game frames its violence and its energy-drink apocalypse as broad, tongue-in-cheek satire, constantly breaking the fourth wall and mocking corporate greed, marketing, and video-game conventions. Killing mutants is rewarded with a style meter that celebrates flashy, acrobatic play, so combat is presented as gleeful spectacle rather than serious or grim conflict.
