Gunfire, explosives and melee weapons tear the limbs and heads off the zombie-like Ridden, and the player is the one doing it - blowing enemies apart is a normal part of every fight.

What it is

Back 4 Blood is a cooperative first-person shooter from the makers of Left 4 Dead. Up to four players (with strangers or friends, plus AI bots) fight through a zombie-apocalypse campaign as survivors called Cleaners, blasting and bludgeoning waves of mutated humans known as the Ridden. The gameplay is built around heavy, blood-soaked combat with dismemberment, and a card system that modifies each run. Content-wise it carries frequent graphic violence and gore, strong profanity in the characters' dialogue, and dark post-apocalyptic subject matter including mass death and a mass grave. There is no sexual content or nudity, and the base game has no microtransactions. Because it is an online team game with open voice and text chat, players may hear unmoderated language from strangers.

How it's framed

The game frames the player as a heroic survivor defending pockets of humanity against an infection-driven monster horde; the violence is directed at clearly non-human mutant enemies rather than innocents, and killing them is the rewarded, expected goal. The grim world and body horror serve the survival-horror tone rather than being dwelt on for shock.
