What it is

Town of Salem is an online multiplayer social deduction game, in the tradition of Mafia and Werewolf, for groups of about 7 to 15 players. Each player is secretly assigned a role in one of three factions — the Town, the Mafia, or various Neutral roles — and the match cycles between night, when killing roles murder other players, and day, when everyone debates who is guilty and votes to put a suspect on trial and hang them. Play runs almost entirely through open text chat with strangers, including private whispers to individual players, so the tone of any given lobby depends on the people in it. Violence appears as brief stylized illustrated death scenes, some showing blood, and the subject matter throughout is murder, betrayal, and execution. The witch-trial theme brings supernatural roles such as witches and necromancers. Real money buys optional cosmetic items only.

How it's framed

The game frames deception, betrayal, and murder as the mechanics of a competitive puzzle rather than as acts with weight: killing, lying about one's role, and voting to hang a fellow player are win conditions to be pursued for either the informed or uninformed side, and both good and evil roles are treated as equally valid ways to play.
