What's in it

Dark themes intense
Moderate

The story turns on unsettling themes of predestination and lost agency — the human protagonist is shown having their controlling soul torn out — and a party member can be killed on a violent playthrough.

Violence cartoon/stylized
Low

Turn-based, bullet-hell combat against cartoon monsters that can be spared or defeated; defeat dissolves foes with no blood, wounds, or gore.

Horror & psychological spooky
Low

Some scenes use eerie, distorted imagery and sudden tonal shifts, including a quiet knife-in-hand moment at a chapter's end, without hunting or trapping the player.

Language mild
Low

Occasional mild profanity such as 'hell' and 'damn', mostly from the rough-edged classmate Susie.

What it is

DELTARUNE is an episodic, story-driven role-playing game from the creator of Undertale, set in a parallel universe. You control a teenager, Kris, who is pulled with classmates into a fantastical Dark World and travels with a small party. Combat is turn-based with dodging mini-games, and most encounters can be resolved either by fighting cartoon monsters or by sparing them peacefully. Between battles you solve puzzles, explore, and talk to a large cast of quirky characters. The tone mixes broad comedy and warmth with a strong undercurrent of unease: the writing returns to ideas of fate and free will, and some scenes carry deliberately disturbing, dread-tinged imagery. Language stays mild and there is no sexual content, and violence is bloodless and stylized.

How it's framed

The game frames its combat as a genuine choice, letting mercy and violence sit side by side and quietly noting the weight of each; its darker, dread-laden threads about control and destiny are presented as mysteries to sit with rather than as spectacle, played straight against an otherwise comedic, affectionate story.
