What it is

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is a single-player action RPG that retells the Dragon Ball Z story across four sagas, letting you play as Goku and other Z-Fighters. The core of the game is martial-arts and energy-blast combat against a run of villains; dramatic fights can leave heroes and enemies bloodied and battered, though injuries are stylized in an anime look with no gore or dismemberment. The story carries heavy subject matter — named heroes die in battle, and antagonists like Frieza and Majin Buu wipe out whole populations. Between fights you explore an open world, fish, hunt wildlife and dinosaurs for cooking ingredients, train, and drive around. Humour is mild, including suggestive gags around the lecherous elder Master Roshi, and profanity stays at mild words. The base game is entirely single-player with no chat or online play and no real-money purchases.

How it's framed

Violence is framed as heroic defence: the Z-Fighters protect Earth and the universe from tyrants, and battle is presented as noble struggle and self-sacrifice rather than aggression. Death is a recurring, weighty theme, though it is softened by the series' resurrection device, the Dragon Balls, which can bring the dead back. Villains are drawn as clearly villainous and the player is cast throughout as the protector.
