What it is

Enclave is a level-based medieval-fantasy action game in which you pick a character, buy weapons and gear with collected gold, and fight through missions in third-person (or optional first-person) view. Two separate campaigns let you play as the forces of Light or the forces of Darkness, each with its own classes and levels. Play is combat-driven: sword and axe melee, bows and crossbows, and magic used against humanoid and monstrous enemies, mixed with simple puzzles and platforming. Enemies bleed when struck, but injuries are not shown in graphic detail. The overarching story deals with war, a divided world and a plot to summon a demon, giving the game a dark tone. It is entirely single-player with no chat, purchases or online features.

How it's framed

The game frames its conflict as a clear-cut struggle between Light and Darkness, and unusually lets you take either side, playing missions from the perspective of the Outlands' minions as readily as the enclave's defenders. The darkness is styled as menace and spectacle — a scheming dark ruler, demons and bleak wastelands — rather than dwelt on for shock, and combat is presented as heroic (or villainous) action rather than realistic harm.
