Players spawn and shoot human and creature NPCs and, in bundled modes like Trouble in Terrorist Town, fire realistic guns at other players; hits produce blood and leave ragdoll bodies, but there is no dismemberment or gore.
Garry's Mod is a physics sandbox built on Valve's Source engine, with no built-in objectives in its base mode. Players spawn props, ragdolls and non-player characters and manipulate them with a physics gun and a tool gun, welding objects together, posing figures and building contraptions. Weapons are available, and spawned NPCs (soldiers, zombies, aliens) can be shot, producing blood effects and ragdoll bodies that remain in the world; the base game shows no dismemberment or gore. Its defining feature is community content: players download user-made add-ons and join community-run servers hosting entirely separate game modes such as the hidden-role shooter Trouble in Terrorist Town, the roleplay mod DarkRP, and the hide-and-seek mode Prop Hunt. The game is heavily multiplayer, with open text and voice chat between strangers on public servers, and the scope of what a player encounters depends on which server and add-ons they choose rather than on a fixed set of shipped content.
The base game frames its content as an open creative toolkit rather than a directed experience, presenting violence as one of many physics-driven interactions players may set up for themselves, with no scoring, reward or narrative attached. Because most content is user-created, the game itself takes no stance on what players build or do; the tone and subject matter of any given session are set by the community server and add-ons a player selects.
