What it is

Gears of War 4 is a third-person cover-based shooter set on the war-torn planet Sera, decades after the events of the original trilogy. Players follow a new squad fighting waves of monstrous Swarm creatures and robotic enemies, using firearms and a chainsaw-bayonet rifle. Combat is extremely bloody: enemies are shot apart, and close-range executions gib and dismember them in graphic detail. Dialogue includes frequent strong profanity. The game features cooperative campaign play plus competitive and Horde multiplayer with open voice and text chat, and offers optional real-money loot boxes ('Gear Packs') for cosmetic items and characters.

How it's framed

The game frames its violence through a heroic military lens: the player's squad defends humanity against an invading subterranean enemy, and gory executions are presented as rewarding combat spectacle rather than something the story questions. Themes of loss, sacrifice, and protecting civilians run through the campaign.
