What it is

Set on the open planet Halpha, this title casts each participant as an ARKS Defender who battles extraterrestrial beasts and mechanical foes through quick, showy combat that plays out in real time. It costs nothing to download and belongs to the online action-MMO genre. Everyone begins by building a character with a deep degree of personalization. Drawing players in are the robust avatar-creation tools, decorative outfit collections, and a personal 'Creative Space' plot to construct, plus team-based skirmishes and late-game boss encounters shared with others over the internet. The fighting is presented in a stylized manner and shows little to no blood. A voluntary in-game store is central, using gacha 'scratch ticket' draws that hand out randomized wardrobe items and, at points, augments that raise stats; fresh draws roll out at a near-weekly pace. Because everyone plays together online, the experience carries typed and spoken chat, individual storefronts, systems for adding friends and forming parties, and content built by the community, which means contact with unfamiliar people is possible. Both the personalization options and store-bought attire may look exposing or sexualized.

How it's framed

Participants are cast as valiant guardians shielding a world and its inhabitants from a corrupting menace, and the fighting reads as spirited, team-minded valor instead of harsh realism. The spending side is dressed up as wardrobe, personal style, and elective ease of play, yet the steady stream of gacha draws and augment offers keeps up a continual push to pay luck-based real currency for decorative items and, on occasion, added combat strength.
