What it is

Return to Castle Wolfenstein is a first-person shooter set in an alternate World War II where an occult branch of the Nazi war machine twists science and dark ritual into a monstrous army. Playing as a US Army Ranger, you move through castles, crypts, bunkers and secret laboratories using guns, grenades, a flamethrower and experimental weapons, with some levels emphasising stealth takedowns of patrolling guards. Combat is bloody: human soldiers, attack dogs, reanimated undead and mutated lab creatures are shot, burned and blown apart, and corpses remain. Beyond ordinary war action the game leans into horror and the occult — undead risen from experiments, grotesque monsters, and a ritual to resurrect an ancient warlord. It also includes team-based online multiplayer.

How it's framed

The game frames the player as a lone soldier dismantling a supernatural Nazi threat, so the violence is directed at enemy soldiers, monsters and the products of the regime's experiments. Its occult and body-horror material is presented as the enemy's design rather than something the player carries out, and the story treats stopping the resurrection plot as the clear objective.
