What it is

Hunt: Showdown 1896 is a first-person extraction shooter set in a supernatural, plague-ridden American frontier of the 1890s. Alone or in a small team, you track and kill monstrous bosses, claim their bounty, and try to escape the map while up to a dozen other real players hunt you for the same prize. Combat is tense and lethal, using period firearms, crossbows, and melee weapons against both grotesque creatures and human opponents, with realistic blood and a single well-placed shot often ending a life. The world leans into gothic horror — undead enemies, hellish monsters, and a fiery ritual used to banish bosses — wrapped in a bleak atmosphere of death and corruption. It is heavily multiplayer, with proximity voice and text that put you in contact with strangers, and it sells optional cosmetic items and seasonal battle passes with real money.

How it's framed

The game frames its violence as brutal but earned survival: killing is the whole loop, rewarded with bounties and gear, and death is punishing and permanent for your hunter. Its horror and demonic imagery serve mood and setting rather than any endorsement, presenting a grim, unforgiving frontier where monsters and rival hunters are equally deadly.
